Crystal Structures and Magnetic Properties of Diaquatetrapyridinenickel(II) and Diaquatetrapyridinecobalt(II) Complexes

Metal complexes with pyridine ligands (py) have not been crystallographically characterized in large numbers, while a number of 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy) structurally characterized. Against this background scarcity py complexes, the aim study was to characterize structures and magnetic properties ligands. In study, new trans-[Ni(H2O)2(py)4][BPh4]2·4py (1) trans-[Co(H2O)2(py)4][BPh4]2·4py (2), were prepared by single-crystal X-ray diffraction method measurements. crystal structure analysis, both found octahedral trans-N2O4 coordination geometry, trans-aqua be enhanced hydrogen-bonded molecules as base. simultaneous analysis susceptibility magnetization, show strong magnetism one direction (χz > χx, χy; Mz Mx, My), explained enhancement axial aqua nickel(II) complex, ligand field cause negative zero-field splitting (D < 0) behavior, cobalt(II) π-orbital effect (Δ) 4T1 ground state behavior.
